Extreme heat is a silent, insidious force that threatens the health and livelihoods of India's most vulnerable workers. It's not just the physical toll it takes, but the economic impact that pushes these workers further into poverty. A recent study by the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) reveals a grim reality: extreme heat is a poverty multiplier for hundreds of millions of workers in India's informal sector. The study found that outdoor workers, who are often the most marginalized, suffer the most. They lose up to 9% of their salary due to extreme heat, which amounts to a staggering £112 ($151). This loss is particularly devastating in the arid desert region of Rajasthan, where heatwaves are prolonged and the death toll is rising. The economic impact is immense, with an estimated 21.1 working days lost each year due to extreme heat, an unaffordable loss for many informal workers. The IIED research highlights the deep-rooted structural inequalities in India, a country striving to become a developed nation in the next two decades. As Ritu Bharadwaj, climate finance director at the IIED, notes, extreme heat is quietly pushing families deeper into poverty. The impact on health is profound. Workers in highly physical jobs, such as agriculture, construction, and transport, lose an average of 6.6% of their salaries due to extreme heat. This takes a toll on their food intake and forces them to work through illness, causing lasting damage to their health. The consequences are far-reaching, with heat-related illnesses and reduced productivity leading to economic losses. The study estimates that heat could cost the Indian economy at least £58 billion, equivalent to 2% of its GDP. This includes wages lost due to reduced productivity, worksite closures, and long-term losses from heat-related illnesses. The situation is dire for informal workers, who lack employment security and often work through illness. They face unsafe conditions and poor access to essential resources like drinking water, shade, and medical support. The story of Inder and Laxmi Kumar, a husband and wife working on a construction site, is a stark example of this struggle. They have fallen ill multiple times, losing nearly four weeks of work and spending their income on medicines. Their home is a makeshift shelter, providing no relief from the heat, and their son suffers from the extreme conditions. The burden on female laborers is even heavier, as many also care for young children while working. Prolonged exposure to heat and dehydration increases the risk of chronic kidney disease, with an estimated 26 million workers at risk. Sattavir, a 38-year-old worker, has suffered from a kidney infection due to extreme heat and dehydration, leading to financial debt and ongoing health issues. The extreme heat often spoils food, making workers sicker, and employers may refuse to pay or provide compensation. The consequences of this crisis are far-reaching, affecting not only the workers' health and livelihoods but also their families and the broader economy. As the world grapples with the impacts of human-caused climate breakdown, India's vulnerable workers face a harsh reality. The study by IIED serves as a stark reminder that extreme heat is not just a weather phenomenon but a social and economic crisis that demands urgent attention and action.
